STONEWALL 2069
We made Stonewall 2069 in 2019 - 50 years after the first rock was hurled by a trans woman of colour, launching the modern day queer liberation movement. This was by no means the first time a queer person stood up for their rights, but history likes to earmark specific events as cultural landmarks. Will the same be said of the future? What will be the singular event 50 years from now that defines a cultural movement?
The film itself queers genre; fluctuating between documentary, performance and science fiction short, asking the question; ‘What will the queer future look like?” If bricks were the hardware of riots 50 years ago, will cyber hacking of queer bio-tech be software of future revolution?
This DAZED-commissioned film was a dream project, bringing together a completely queer and minority ethnic cast and crew from the International community. From Sci-Fi artist Esmay Wagemans to Creative Director Joel Palmer, 3D artist Sam Aldridge and Composer J.Aria, the development process began with intense conversations of Queerness and the Future. We challenged ourselves to subvert ideologies and challenge gender and sexual binaries.
STONEWALL 2069 is a short art film commissioned by the ICA and DAZED for the BBC as part of their New Creatives programme.
